The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) is a Federal Department of Education program providing grants to support foreign language programs in public elementary and secondary schools. In 2007, the Deparment awarded over $22 million to school districts throughout the country under the FLAP program. Following is the Department's summary of this program.
 

 

Enacted in 2006, the National Security Language Initiative(NSLI) is designed to dramatically increase the number of Americans learning critical need foreign languages such as Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and others through new and expanded programs from kindergarten through university and into the workforce.  Among other things, NSLI will provide $24 million to refocus FLAP grants to support Mandarin chinese and other critical need languages in K-12.
